As we approach Halloween, we want to talk about a very scary topic…DIY electrical work! 👻 As your local Harlow electricians, we feel its important homeowners understand the risks and dangers of attempting electrical work without the training to perform such tasks correctly. If you’re facing an electrical problem our advice is to ALWAYS call your local electrician, if you’re based in Harlow – that’s us.

DIY Electrical work – why it’s not worth the risk…

Attempting to fix electrical faults yourself without adequate training is never a smart idea. You might be thinking “Oh I can fix this & I’ll save a few quid!” but in reality, something will likely go wrong, and you might even make the problem worse meaning a more expensive repair. That YouTube tutorial isn’t going to help you if you get stuck mid repair – however we will. We really want our customers to understand the dangers of DIY electrical work so here are just a few issues you might encounter…

  • Hidden dangers: A lot of our homes electrical system is hidden behind walls and its likely wires are in places you’d never even think of. With no experience it’s highly likely you’ll end up disturbing something you shouldn’t.
  • Electrocution & risk of fire: This may sound a little extreme, but the risk of electrocution is high. The same goes for fires. To an untrained eye it’s easy to get yourself into a very dangerous situation. It’s been reported that around 1 in 4 people have electrocuted themselves whilst performing DIY tasks around the home. It’s just not worth the risk!
  • Inspection issues: Certain installations will need to be inspected by a fully qualified electrician before use. If the electrician deems the installation unsafe, it will be to be ‘made safe’ – this will result in more costs.
  • Home insurance: Some insurance providers may void your policy if accidental damage is caused by DIY electrical work.
