What are downlights?

Downlights are a great addition to almost any room and can offer a very sleek and modern look whilst providing exceptional even lighting to all corners of the space.  Modern downlights are very energy efficient and consumer little power whilst giving off plenty of light.

Good quality LED downlights last much longer than their halogen counterparts so they are a fantastic option for anyone that doesn’t wish to regularly replace lights. There are options to have downlights with integral lamps (bulbs) or replaceable lamps if you would prefer.

As your local ELECTRICIAN IN HARLOW, we are able to install all kinds of styles and finishes of downlights for you in to almost any space that you require them.

Where are downlights best installed?

Many customers choose to have downlights installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms. In fact, downlights can be installed in almost any room.

The downlights must be suitably rated for their installed environment and as such, a higher IP rating (dust and water prevention) must be selected for certain areas in bathrooms.

Downlights work best when they are situated away from the edges of the room unless you like the effect. In kitchens, this means situating the downlights away from worktops but not too far away. We want enough light to carry out our tasks but without casting shadows on the work tops from wall cabinets.

What is involved?

Where there is only a central fitting in the room at present this needs to be made into a safe electrical junction from which we can supply the other downlights that need to be installed.

Electrical Cables will be run from the main point to each of the new downlight positions and looped around between the lights until the final lighting point is fed.

Circular holes are cut in the ceiling to allow for the installation of the new lights. In rooms where there is a loft space above, installation is slightly easier for us to carry out.

In ground floor rooms where there is another floor above, some more cutting of the ceiling may be required in order to safely route cables to the desired positions.

Can you replace existing downlights?

Existing downlights can be replaced with new modern LED downlights without too many problems. The size of the existing downlights will need to be measured to ensure that the new ones will fit.

Where smaller downlights were installed previously, holes can be expertly enlarged and newer lights fitted. Where the previous downlight installation holes were very large, we are able to source larger downlights with cover plates that blend into the ceiling and cover the large openings.

What do new downlights cost?

The cost for our services can be found on our services page. If you require a completely new downlight installation and have an older style consumer unit or fuse box, there may be some modifications that need to occur to bring the electrical system up to standard in order to safely carry out new work.

New Kitchen or Bathroom

When planning a new kitchen or bathroom it’s important to consider the electrical requirements of the new room. Downlight cables are often best installed throughout the renovation process to avoid cosmetic damage afterwards.
