Well where to start? Other than wiring things up and writing about something electrical. I thought as many of our customers have ponds and share a keen interest in fish keeping, I would share a bit of my knowledge on the subject, namely ponds.

As the cold winter months are approaching, what can you do to keep your pond and those beloved fish healthy?

For starters as the temperature drops so does your fishes metabolism, so they need feeding less often and their food should be changed also. A wheatgerm based food is a good choice as it contains less protein and is easily digestible in the colder months. When and if the temperature drops below 4 degrees, it’s best to stop the feeds altogether until the weather warms up a bit.

Another top tip is to cover your pond with a mesh or netting, because as your fishes metabolism slows down so does the speed they can move, making them easy pray for next doors cat or a cheeky heron.

If your pond freezes over on those icy nights, it’s not a good idea to break up the ice as this makes shock waves, causing unnecessary stress to your fish. A solution to this problem is to install pond heaters to stop your pond from freezing over.

Now for the filter, this should always be running. Your ponds filter is basically a life support system, it contains good bacteria which converts fish waste back to a safe level for your fish. By turning your filter off you are starving the filter of oxygen and killing the good bacteria, so keep this running 24/7.

Onto the plant’s, all dead leaves should be removed as decaying leaves cause low oxygen levels which is harmful to your fish. Ponds can still be enjoyed in the winter evenings by installing decorative garden lighting to make a real eye catching garden feature.

Any power supplying a pond or anywhere outdoors should be protected by an RCD and have the correct circuit protection installed.

We hope these tips help out. JJB Electrical ltd your electricians in Cheshunt
