In 2026, solar panels have become one of the smartest upgrades UK homeowners can make. They reduce energy bills, increase property value, and give you more control over your electricity use. But if you’ve never installed solar before, it’s natural to feel unsure about how the whole process works.

Here’s what you can expect when installing solar at home from the first call to the day your system goes live and everything that happens after.

If you’re considering making the switch soon, now is a great time. Until 31 March 2026, JJB Electrical is offering a free Ohme ePod EV charger with any solar installation that includes at least eight panels and a 5kW battery system.

Step One: The Initial Assessment

Your solar journey begins with a conversation. We’ll ask about your current electricity usage, your goals for the system, and whether you’re considering battery storage or planning to charge an electric vehicle. This helps us understand what kind of setup will actually benefit you.

Next, we’ll arrange a free home survey. One of our qualified installers will visit your property to assess your roof size and angle, check for shading issues, and review your existing electrical system. We’ll also talk to you about where the inverter and battery would be placed and whether your current consumer unit is ready for a solar setup.

This survey usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes, and there’s no commitment required.

Step Two: Your Personalised Proposal

Based on your home and your needs, we’ll design a system that makes sense for you. Your quote will include the number of panels, projected energy generation per year, a suggested battery size if applicable, and a full breakdown of pricing.

We’ll also include estimated savings, return on investment over time, and explain how the Smart Export Guarantee works if you want to sell unused energy back to the grid.

The proposal is clear, straightforward, and tailored to your home and budget.

Step Three: Booking and Network Approval

If you’re happy with the proposal, we’ll move forward with scheduling. Before any solar system is installed, we’re required to notify your local Distribution Network Operator. This process is something we handle for you and typically takes a few days.

Once approval is granted, we’ll book your installation date at a time that works best for you.

Step Four: Installation Day

Most residential installations take between one and two days to complete. On the day of install, our team will arrive promptly, set up any scaffolding if needed, and begin working on your roof.

We’ll securely mount the panels, install the inverter and battery, run the necessary cabling, and connect everything to your consumer unit. We’ll also install any monitoring tools or smart apps so you can track your system’s performance.

Our team works carefully, respectfully, and cleanly. You don’t need to vacate your home, and we aim to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

Step Five: Testing and System Handover

Once your system is up and running, we’ll carry out full testing to ensure everything is operating safely and efficiently. We’ll guide you through how to use your new solar system, including how to monitor production through your mobile app.

We’ll also provide you with your MCS certificate, electrical safety certificate, warranty documents, and help with setting up your SEG registration if you plan to export energy back to the grid.

This step ensures your system is compliant and that you’re confident in how everything works.

What Happens After the Installation

Solar systems require very little maintenance. The panels are self-cleaning and designed to last 25 years or more. Most inverters come with warranties of around 10 years, and battery systems are built for long-term use.

We recommend checking your performance through the app from time to time. If anything seems unusual, JJB Electrical is always available for aftercare and support.

Limited-Time Offer: Free Ohme ePod EV Charger

To make the decision even easier, we’re offering something extra for new customers. Until 31 March 2026, JJB Electrical will include a free Ohme ePod EV charger with every solar system that includes at least eight panels and a 5kW battery storage system.

This charger is fully installed by our certified team and is ideal for anyone who currently drives an electric vehicle or is thinking about switching to one in the future.

Combining solar with EV charging gives you even more savings and control over your home energy use.
