With the DIY craze constantly growing and everybody looking to improve their homes and gardens and why wouldn’t you we all want a nicer looking home, don’t we? However, people are cutting corners where it really matters!

At present it is not illegal to carry out some DIY electrical work. It does require some common knowledge and competency of the task you are going to undertake.

We see on daily basses where people are taking unnecessary risks with electrics. Where they don’t understand the risks involved in what they are doing. Only this week one of our clients was telling us a story about how he was changing a socket face, thought he had isolated the circuit, removed it to replace it only to find the circuit was still live and himself on the opposite site of the room from the shock he got.

Thankfully unharmed just a little shocked pardon the pun. This is how a simple task can go so wrong if you do not have an understanding and the tools to do the job correctly.

With the above story in mind, it does seem some homeowners are not aware they are breaking the law to carry out some of the more complex electrical projects.

With so many carrying out partial rewires to their homes, consumer unit changes, new garden lighting and additional circuits. The issue is the work cannot be guaranteed to be safe and comply with current wiring regulations and will not be certified, meaning unnecessary risk to you, your family, the property and can cause problems when it comes time to sell your property in the future. With electricity killing 1 person per week in the UK and injuring 1000′s more, the concern is that the lack of understanding is contributing to these alarming statistics.

With many of these tasks being carried out in aid to save money and the need to give it a go first, we fully understand this but would urge that you have all the works certified just for that piece of mind.

We would exercise caution over carrying out any electrical work in your home if you are not confident in doing so. Damage caused to electrical circuits from incorrect DIY work can be costly to repair and its far cheaper to use a Part P Registered Electrician from the outset to carry out the work.

We are often called to repair DIY electrical work and constantly see instances of bad electrical work in Broxbourne and Hertfordshire areas which would ultimately cause injury to the householder. The worrying fact is that this doesn’t happen straight away, it can be a number of years down the line when catastrophe occurs.

Please stay safe if you are doing any DIY electrical work and just remember to always have it checked by a registered electrician.
