At JJB electrical we get asked and upgrade a number a fuse boards on a monthly basis, some of the main reasons we get asked to change them are age and safety concerns.

Before every fuse board upgrade we always carry out an Electrical installation condition report, the reason why we do this is to highlight any safety concerns and potential faults within the system so they can be addressed before we upgrade the board. Think of this report like an MOT for the electrical system in your home, we check the condition of the cabling, check that’s everything’s wired correctly, terminations at the accessories are tight and correct (sockets, switches, lights, etc), we also look for signs of burning, wear and tear plus a whole lot more.  We deem this to be 100% necessary to be done beforehand to rule out any tripping of the circuits due to faults which older circuit breakers and wired fuses wouldn’t detect and make sure the electrics in your home are in a safe condition.

We are now on the 18th edition of the wiring regulations and they stipulate that consumer unit / fuse board, should be metal and contain fire barriers, RCD protection is a must and pretty much every installation is in need of surge protection and you should be offered arc fault detection devices.

As a standard we always fit surge protection and we never install cheaper split load RCD protected boards, we only use RCBOs as to avoid any nuisance tripping and loosing half the power to your house, which is what happens with dual RCD split load boards.

An RCBO is basically a RCD mixed with a circuit breaker so it protects against many types of faults and dangerous situations and if one would occur only that circuit would trip whilst still offering maximum safety.

Consumer units are known by a number of names; Fuse boards, fuse box, trip box, trip switches and many more
