We spent four days in a garden in Goffs Oak earlier this year turning a fully landscaped plot into something the owners could actually use after dark. Spike lights through the planted borders, step lighting on the level changes, up-and-down lights on the walls, festoon over the seating area, plus a proper supply run out to the garden room. Goffs Oak is a mixed bag electrically, and that shapes the work. There's a solid core of 1950s housing, a scattering of older cottages, and a lot of newer estates that have gone up in the last decade or two. The single most common thing we come across in the older properties around Goffs Oak is VIR cabling — vulcanised india rubber, the black rubber-sheathed stuff installed before PVC took over. It looks fine until you move it. The rubber perishes, the insulation crumbles off the conductor, and you end up with bare copper sitting in a ceiling void. We've pulled lengths out of 1950s semis here where the sheath came away in the hand.

Old fuseboards are the other one. Rewireable fuse carriers, no RCD protection, sometimes a Wylex board that's been added to three times over the decades. The third is one people don't expect: pest damage. Squirrels and mice in loft spaces have a go at cable sheathing, and we've traced more than one intermittent lighting fault back to a chewed run above a bedroom ceiling. The garden lighting job, in a bit more detail

Coming back to that Goffs Oak garden, because it's a good example of how we work. The customer had a detached house with a garden that had just been landscaped, and they wanted it to feel like an extension of the house in the evening rather than a black hole beyond the patio doors.

Position matters more than the fittings do. Rather than ringing the perimeter with lights, we planned the whole thing in zones — trees and borders on one, steps and pathways on another, the seating area and festoon on a third — all wired back to a smart switching system. That means they can light one corner for a quiet evening or the whole garden when they've got people over, instead of everything blazing at once.

Cable routing was the real work. Access was tight in places and some of the runs were long, so we used a mix of buried SWA, concealed routes and neatly clipped runs to keep it discreet and get power out to the garden room at the same time. Four days start to finish, and the borders came through it intact. The garden was designed first; the electrics were made to fit round it.
